Renowned lawyer and former Pakistan Peoples Party leader, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, voiced concerns on Tuesday, stating that the upcoming general election could face controversy if ousted premier Imran Khan is barred from participating. Addressing the media outside the Lahore High Court (LHC), Ahsan emphasized the necessity of a true level-playing field in the elections.
Ahsan also took issue with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz’s demand for the acquittal of party supremo Nawaz Sharif, questioning the fairness of such a plea. He highlighted the apparent disparity in the freedom of movement between Imran Khan and thrice ousted former premier Nawaz Sharif, who, despite being a convict, enjoys unrestricted mobility.
Furthermore, Aitzaz Ahsan raised a crucial point, stating that Nawaz Sharif cannot be elected as prime minister for the fourth time without a constitutional amendment passed by an elected parliament. This legal perspective adds depth to the ongoing political discourse, underlining the importance of adhering to constitutional procedures in the upcoming electoral process.
