Karachi Bar Association Protests Soaring Electricity Rates and Lack of Government Support for Lawyers

The Karachi Bar Association (KBA) staged a protest ON saturday, voicing strong opposition to the skyrocketing electricity rates and the government’s failure to provide financial support for the legal community. The demonstration, held outside the Bar office drew a large crowd of lawyers and supporters who demanded immediate action from the authorities.

KBA members addressed the gathering, highlighting the dual financial burden faced by lawyers due to the exorbitant electricity bills and the lack of governmental aid. “The recent surge in electricity rates has hit us hard. Many of our members are struggling to keep their offices running,” one member said. “On top of that, the government has not allocated any funds to support lawyers during these challenging times.”

Chanting slogans and holding banners, the protesters marched through the streets, calling for a rollback of the increased electricity tariffs and urging the government to provide immediate financial relief to the legal fraternity. The protestors emphasized that the rising costs are not only affecting their professional lives but also their ability to serve the public effectively.

“We are essential to the justice system, yet we receive no support,” lamented KBA elected member a practicing lawyer. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to manage our expenses. The government needs to recognize our plight and take action.”

The protestors also highlighted the broader impact of the increased electricity rates on the general public and small businesses, urging the government to reconsider its policies and provide subsidies or other forms of relief to mitigate the economic strain.

The KBA announced that if their demands are not met, they would intensify their protests and consider legal action against the government. They also called on other bar associations across the country to join in solidarity.

The government’s response to these demands remains to be seen, but the KBA’s protest has certainly brought attention to the pressing issues faced by the legal community in Karachi.
