The Lahore High Court Bar Association has announced that lawyers will no longer be required to wear gowns in court starting from March 30, 2026. The notification, issued by the Secretary of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, states that the traditional black gown will not be mandatory for court appearances, marking a significant shift in courtroom attire requirements.
This decision is part of the Lahore Bar’s long-standing efforts to support the health, comfort, and safety of lawyers. Over the years, the Bar has consistently introduced practical initiatives aimed at improving working conditions for legal practitioners, particularly during extreme weather when heavy gowns often contribute to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and physical discomfort. The Bar has maintained that such steps are essential to ensuring a more humane and sustainable work environment.
The relaxation of the dress code also aligns with global trends, where many jurisdictions have modernized professional attire to reflect contemporary needs. The initiative reinforces the Bar’s commitment to lawyers’ welfare, enabling them to focus better on their professional responsibilities while maintaining decorum without compromising health or comfort.
