The Supreme Court on Saturday defended lifetime security for its retired judges, calling it a lawful measure under a Presidential Order due to the sensitive nature of their past duties and security risks.
In a statement, the court clarified that a recent circular was not about “extraordinary favours,” but about aligning security with legal entitlements, reducing unnecessary force deployment, and improving coordination with the Interior Ministry and provinces.
In a notable move, the Chief Justice’s convoy has been scaled down from eight vehicles to just two, freeing up security personnel for policing duties.
Officials said the decision reflects the court’s commitment to prudent use of public funds while ensuring judges’ safety. Security for serving judges has also been revised to remove excessive or inconsistent arrangements.
The court emphasized that public resources must be used wisely — even in matters as sensitive as judicial security.
