Sindh Bar Council Rejects Pakistan Bar Council’s Stance, Vows to Continue Protests Against Indus Canal Project

The Sindh Bar Council has issued a strong condemnation of the Pakistan Bar Council’s recent resolution calling for an end to peaceful protests against the Indus River canal construction and corporate farming land allotments. In an emergency resolution (Ref No. R-70/SBC/2025) dated April 28, 2025, the SBC clarified that it never discussed or approved any such position, rejecting what it called a “purported unanimous resolution” allegedly issued by the SBC Secretary on April 27. The council emphasized that no meeting was convened nor any consensus sought on this critical matter, accusing certain elements of misrepresenting the legal fraternity’s stance.

Expressing full solidarity with the Sindh Lawyers Action Committee, the SBC warned that the proposed six canals and corporate land allocations pose grave threats to Sindh’s water security, ecological balance, and millions of livelihoods. The council members, including Vice Chairman Shafqat Rahim Rajput and prominent lawyers like Sajjad Ahmed Chandio and Farkhanda Jabeen, unanimously denounced what they termed an “anti-Sindh agenda,” demanding immediate retraction of the PBC’s statement and the Secretary’s unauthorized resolution. The SBC reaffirmed its commitment to continue peaceful protests as a legitimate democratic right, vowing to protect Sindh’s resources through all legal means while calling for meaningful government dialogue to address these pressing concerns.
