Water Apportionment Accord of 1991

Water Apportionment Accord 1991.

March 1991, fair distribution of Indus water system among 4 provinces of Pakistan was signed under CCI ( council of common interest) with name water distribution Accord 1991.

Over distribution of water among provinces also a watchdog organisation was set in form of IRSA( Indus River system authority) to monitor equal distribution of water among all provinces of country.

Many attempts have been made in one or other way to take more than water from Indus River leaving Sindh province a barren province.

Sindh is a purely agricultural province depending mainly on wheat and cotton crops, rice crop has been banned a decade ago owing to shortage of water. But Punjab province has been receiving more water than per set criteria of distribution by water Accord of 1991.

Moreover, Kalla bag dam was proposed to be built on Indus River that was resisted by the people of Sindh. An other controversial 6 canals project has been signed by the president of Pakistan Mr Asif Ali Zardari with tagg of Green Pakistan project. This project will make deserted land of Punjab a useful and green in turn will destroy green lands of Sindh converting them to barren -desert.

People of Sindh province are on roads and peaceful demonstration have been carried against 6 canal projects to be built on Indus River.

Authority concerned should follow at least their proposed 1991 water Accord and give all provinces their right of water as the shortage of water can destroy life on earth.
