Special Remission of (120) Days Granted to Convicted Prisoners in Sindh Prisons for Eid-ul-Fitr (2024)

In anticipation of the upcoming Eid-ul-FitrĀ  (2024), the Inspector General of Sindh Prisons & Corrections Service has submitted a formal request for the grant of Special Remission to all convicted prisoners currently held in the prisons of Sindh Province. This request is made in accordance with Rule 788 of the Sindh Prisons & Corrections Rules 2019, in conjunction with Rules 789, 790, and 791 of the same regulations.

The proposed remission entails a reduction in the sentence of imprisonment by one hundred twenty (120) days for eligible prisoners. However, it is important to note that this remission does not apply to condemned prisoners convicted of severe crimes such as murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist activities, rape, kidnapping, abduction, robbery, dacoity, offenses under the Foreigners Act 1946, offenses under the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2022, as well as cases of financial embezzlement and causing loss to the national exchequer.

Under the authority vested in the Honourable Chief Minister of Sindh, Special Remissions for a period not exceeding 120 days in one year can be granted, as per Rule 788 read with rules 789, 790, and 791 of the Sindh Prisons & Corrections Services Rules 2019.

In light of the aforementioned provisions, it is urged that the Honourable Chief Minister Sindh approves the request for granting special remissions on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr (2024) to eligible convicted prisoners in Sindh Province.

This decision, while providing a temporary relief to deserving prisoners, underscores the government’s commitment to humanitarian considerations and ensuring justice within the legal framework.
