Sindh Bar Council Moves to Remove Government-Employed Lawyers from Voters List

In a significant step toward ensuring compliance with the Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Act, 1973, the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) has initiated a verification process to identify lawyers who are holding government jobs while continuing to practice. In an official letter dated March 6, 2026, addressed to the Accountant General of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, the SBC has requested verification of lawyers’ CNICs to determine if any are employed in government positions, excluding those in prosecution or law departments. The council has shared a USB containing the list of advocates and their CNIC details, urging that those found ineligible be separated from the voters list and SBC ledger immediately.

The move, led by Vice Chairman Ishtiaq Ahmed Memon and focal person Waqar Alam Abbasi, is seen as a major crackdown on dual professionals misusing their licenses. This action holds particular significance as elections for the Karachi Bar Association (KBA), pending since December 2025, are yet to be held. The SBC’s proactive measure aims to clean the electoral rolls and ensure that only eligible advocates participate in the bar’s democratic process.
