Madrid, 28 June 2024 – Spain has officially submitted a Declaration of Support to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case brought by South Africa against Israel, regarding the application of the Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip.
“This support is motivated by our responsibility as a State party to the Genocide Convention and our firm commitment to international law,” the Spanish Foreign Ministry stated.
Spain’s decision to back Gaza aligns it with other nations such as Colombia, Mexico, and Palestine, with additional countries like Ireland, Belgium, and Chile expected to join the effort. This move underscores Spain’s dedication to supporting the ICJ’s mission in upholding a rules-based international order.
“We seek to contribute to bringing peace back to Gaza and the Middle East,” the ministry added, emphasizing the urgent need for a two-state solution to ensure lasting peace and stability for both Palestinians and Israelis. Spain also highlighted its deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, citing restricted access to aid and the widespread destruction of infrastructure.
In their statement, Spanish officials urged the ICJ to address the obligation to prevent genocide and ensure compliance with the Court’s binding precautionary measures. Spain has committed to adhering to the ICJ’s ruling, further demonstrating its support for international judicial decisions and its dedication to fostering global peace and stability.
This support comes amidst continued international condemnation of Israel’s offensive on Gaza, which began after an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas. Over 37,700 Palestinians have been killed, most of them women and children, and more than 86,500 have been injured according to local health authorities. The ongoing conflict has left large areas of Gaza in ruins, exacerbated by a severe blockade restricting food, clean water, and medicine.
Spain’s proactive stance highlights its role in addressing international humanitarian issues and promoting justice through legal channels.
