Tanvir Ilyas, the current prime minister, was removed from office by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) High Court on Tuesday due to allegations of contempt. As a result, Tanvir Ilyas was declared ineligible to serve as a member of the AJK Legislative Assembly by the Chief Election Commissioner of AJK.
Tanvir Ilyas had alleged that the judiciary was interfering with the operation of his government and the executive branch through stay orders. He spoke out against the court’s directives to reopen tobacco companies that had engaged in billions of rupees’ worth of tax fraud.
The court took note of Ilyas’ anti-judiciary sentiments and asked him to clarify his stance on remarks disparaging the judiciary made in public addresses.
He was found guilty of making statements that were critical of the judiciary by the high court’s full bench on Tuesday, and they also handed down a punishment. The Assembly is now dissolved as a result of his disqualification.
