Pakistan Bar Council Appoints New Chairman without election

Islamabad, February 6, 2025 — The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has appointed Mr. Muhammad Yaseen Azad as the new Chairman of its Executive Committee following the elevation of Mr. Muhammad Tariq Afridi to the position of Additional Judge at the Peshawar High Court. The decision was made during an emergency meeting held at the PBC office in the Supreme Court Building, Islamabad.

Mr. Azad, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court, is well-known for his previous roles, including serving as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan and a former member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. He has now been elected for the position of Chairman for the year 2025.

Despite the significance of the position, the election process was notably bypassed, with the PBC Executive Committee unanimously appointing Mr. Azad without offering an opportunity for other members to contest the seat. This move has raised concerns within the legal community about the transparency and inclusivity of the decision-making process.

Critics argue that the lack of a democratic election for such an important role undermines the principles of fairness and equal opportunity within the Bar Council. Many have expressed disappointment that the process allowed for the appointment to be made without opening the floor to potential candidates, thus limiting opportunities for other qualified members of the legal profession.

As the legal community watches closely, questions remain about the Pakistan Bar Council’s commitment to democratic practices and fostering a more inclusive environment for future leadership roles.
