Karachi Bar Association Cabinet Condemns Lahore Violence, Calls for Protest in a General Body Meeting

In a resolute stance against recent events in Lahore, the Karachi Bar Association Cabinet 2024 convened a general body meeting on May 11, 2024. The meeting, marked by fervent discussions, centered on the precarious state of the nation and widespread injustices prevailing across the country.

Members of the Cabinet expressed deep concern over the violent events unfolding in Lahore, denouncing them as a flagrant violation of the justice system and a blatant misuse of power. They emphasized that such injustices have persisted for the past six months, with peaceful protests being held during this period. However, they questioned why only now were these peaceful protests of lawyers being targeted and attacked.

Highlighting a history of incitement dating back to 2007, the Cabinet asserted that lawyers have been continuously targeted and unlawfully arrested by the establishment. They adamantly rejected the notion that such actions against the legal community are acceptable in any way.

The Cabinet declared that the ongoing protest is not merely a momentary outcry but marks the commencement of a new chapter in their struggle for justice. Despite attempts to silence them, they vowed to persist in their pursuit of truth and fairness.

Addressing the response from Lahore High Court judges, who have condemned the protests and initiated legal action against participating lawyers, the Cabinet criticized the judiciary’s stance. They pointed out the disparity in treatment, highlighting the lack of action against those who have unlawfully intruded into lawyers’ residences.

Furthermore, the Cabinet raised concerns about the Supreme Court Bar Association’s alignment with the establishment, accusing it of neglecting fundamental rights in favor of supporting military rule. They criticized the labeling of lawyers as unqualified, asserting that it is the generals who have initiated campaigns against legal professionals who lack qualification.

In conclusion, the Karachi Bar Association Cabinet reiterated their unwavering resolve to stand against injustice and uphold the principles of democracy and the rule of law. They affirmed that they will not retreat in the face of adversity and will continue their struggle until justice is served.
