In a decisive emergency meeting convened on January 23, 2024, the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) has introduced stringent resolutions addressing several crucial matters pertinent to the legal community.
1. Dress Code and Identification for Law Students: The Karachi Bar Association has resolved to enforce a dress code for law students actively engaged in court proceedings. As per the new regulations, law students are strictly prohibited from wearing attire in black or blue colors, commonly associated with practicing lawyers. Instead, they are advised to wear attire that distinguishes them from the legal professionals. Furthermore, it is now mandatory for law students to prominently display their college identification cards while working within court premises.
2. Restriction on Campaigning in Bar Elections: The KBA has imposed restrictions on law students participating in the campaigning process during bar elections. According to the new resolution, law students are explicitly prohibited from campaigning for any candidate running in bar elections. This measure aims to ensure a fair and unbiased election process within the legal community.
3. Inclusion of Ledger Numbers in FIRs by Advocates: In a bid to enhance transparency and accountability, advocates practicing in Karachi are now required to include their ledger numbers when filing First Information Reports (FIRs). This resolution seeks to streamline record-keeping processes and facilitate efficient tracking of legal proceedings.
The Karachi Bar Association believes that these resolutions will contribute to maintaining decorum, integrity, and fairness within the legal community, fostering an environment that upholds the principles of justice and professionalism.
