In an already downsizing economy, the escalating fees have become beyond affordability. It is estimated that more than ninety percent of the total income of lower – middle class is spent on the consumption of food. The citizens who were shifting towards upward social mobility are witnessing the issues of survival, hence the socioeconomic situation of this country is not quite different from that of our neighbor Afghanistan.
I myself have studied in this institution for the five-year program although it turned into seven years, due to improper scheduling of exams by Karachi University affiliating SMLC. Thus, I can tell you by fact that the administration will not adequately acknowledge you at the time of admission about the rise in fees in the future rather they will intimate and manipulate you by showing the names of the prominent judges lists at the front gate because they only own those who are successful, not otherwise. That being the Semi-Private Institution, the College is run by the Board which makes decisions on the enhancement of fees and all other significant matters. While the students suffer with the fees burden in the Semi- government institution, it’s the Board on whose decision their hopes lie priorly.
The Government of Sindh had been ignorant and discourteous towards the institution, even being the oldest, it was never given the honor of having a separate identity instead of having an affiliated system. The LLM program has ended in the institution due to which the Institution has been running solely on the fees of Five years Program. while the new universities are being built upon its the SMLC which is graving upon by the Government of Sindh. But who is kept at sufferance is the Question revolving around and it’s fact not the institution but the students who are getting their education with the hope of building their future under their Parent’s minimum Salary.
Furthermore, the concealment of facts or criminal misappropriation does not fall, for you under the section of the Pakistan penal code (PPC). Is the legislation only formulated for the underprivileged class? Does the law not apply to you? I categorically say that our standing on 130 out of 139 in the ‘rule of law index will always remain unless this lawlessness exists in this country.
This is an unending discussion that could span from many prospects leading to many solutions and ways for the college but for students, only one solution has their expectations attached. Summing up the discussion and while emphasizing a hike in fees is obviously not a good option in this crippling economy it’s the administration and the board ought to revisit their decision so that the many aspirants won’t be deprived of their dream – Profession.
