President Alvi Grants Clemency to Women and Children with Short-Term Sentences

In a compassionate gesture aimed at promoting justice and empathy within the legal system, President Arif Alvi has decided to exercise his constitutional authority to grant clemency to women and children convicted of minor offenses. Acting on the advice of the Prime Minister, President Alvi invoked Article 45 of the Constitution, allowing for the release of individuals serving sentences of less than two years. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to humanitarian values and seeks to provide a second chance to those who have committed minor transgressions.

However, it’s important to note that the scope of this pardon excludes individuals convicted under the Anti-Terrorism Act and Anti-Narcotics laws. Additionally, serious offenders, such as those convicted of murder, treason, or robbery, will not benefit from this measure. President Alvi’s decision strikes a balance between mercy and accountability, ensuring that while leniency is extended to certain segments of the population, the integrity of the justice system is upheld.

This initiative reflects a broader effort by the government to address the issue of prison overcrowding and promote rehabilitation over punitive measures, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children. By granting clemency to those with short-term sentences, President Alvi aims to alleviate the burden on the country’s prisons and facilitate the reintegration of these individuals into society. This move underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a more just and equitable legal system that prioritizes compassion and fairness.
