In a shocking turn of events, Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chattha resigned from his post on Saturday, citing his involvement in election rigging within his division.
Addressing a press conference at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Chattha admitted to the rigging, revealing that his guilt had driven him to attempt suicide earlier in the day.
He confessed to orchestrating the rigging that resulted in the defeat of winning candidates on 13 seats in the Rawalpindi division. Chattha pointed fingers at Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, accusing him of complicity in the rigging. Moreover, he blamed Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa for the electoral malpractice, asserting that they both deserved severe punishment, including the death penalty, for their injustice.
Chattha disclosed that his suicide attempt during the Fajr prayer prompted him to come forward with the truth, admitting to sleepless nights plagued by guilt over betraying the trust of the people and the country.
Contrary to his accusations, Chattha praised the fair conduct of the army in overseeing the elections, asserting that there was no need for reelection.
He recounted witnessing presiding officers in tears over the situation, underscoring the gravity of the rigging scandal.
Following his confession, security forces arrested Chattha and transported him to an undisclosed location for further proceedings.
The Rawalpindi division, comprising Attock, Murree, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Chakwal districts, now grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented revelation.
In response to these allegations, PTI leader Barrister Gohar demanded an immediate inquiry, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in the electoral process.
