In a horrifying turn of events, a lawyer fatally shot a female law student and critically injured her brother in the Naseem Nagar area of Hyderabad on Thursday. Identified as Irshad Khokhar, the assailant later turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. The victims, Yusra Pathan and her brother Akash Pathan, were returning home from university on a motorcycle when Khokhar intercepted them near Wadu Wah with his car.
Akash Pathan’s condition was described as critical by doctors treating him. Initial investigations by the police revealed that Khokhar, a lawyer, had allegedly been pursuing Yusra romantically, but she had consistently rebuffed his advances. It is believed that Khokhar’s extreme actions were a result of Yusra’s rejection.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among their fellow students at the Department of Law, Metharam University of Sindh. Both siblings, Agha Yusra and Agha Akash, were popular and promising students of LLB 2. Reports suggest that Irshad Khoso, their classmate, harbored romantic intentions towards Yusra and had expressed a desire to marry her. However, faced with rejection from both Yusra and her family, Khoso resorted to this violent act.
Following the shooting, Akash Pathan was rushed to Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) in Hyderabad in critical condition. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the government offered to cover the expenses for his treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Hyderabad. However, the hospital administration at Aga Khan Hospital has refused to admit the injured law student, forcing the family to seek treatment for him at Ziauddin Hospital in Karachi, where he has been placed on a ventilator.
The tragic incident highlights the urgent need for measures to address issues of harassment and violence against women, particularly within educational institutions. It also underscores the importance of providing immediate and adequate medical assistance to victims of such senseless acts of violence. As the community mourns the loss of Yusra Pathan and prays for the recovery of Akash Pathan, there are growing calls for justice and accountability in this heartbreaking case.
